About the exhibition

A solo show by Vita Soul Wilmering - opening during Hoogtij: 29 May, 19:00-23:00

In Mixed Feelings, Vita Soul Wilmering (1996) plays with the boundary between documentary and fiction filmmaking. Through this particular mode of storytelling—at times playful, at times disorienting—she offers a through-line of memory and present experiences; of imagination and raw intimacy; of reminiscing and re-enactment. Mixed Feelings approaches entangled relationships (the familial, romantic, estranged and friendly) with honesty—investigating loss and absence, as well as family history, love and affection.

For this exhibition, Vita Soul Wilmering has created a spatial collage of shifting film scenes, centred around themes of intimacy, memory and re-enactment. The six-channel video installation features fragments of the artist’s earlier films, current work in progress, and never-before-shown footage from Wilmering’s own archive. Mixed Feelings includes fragments from the films (un)scripted (2024), The failed holiday: episode 10 (2021), Spiegl (2021), Insomnia (2026), Dear Athanase (in progress) and Zonder (2014).

Side programme and guest talks

Alongside the exhibition, Vita Soul Wilmering invited three people to give a talk about their work. Coming from fields as diverse as medicine, poetry, and historical research, each speaker engages with intimate or deeply personal themes at the heart of their work. In different ways, their talks echo the themes of the exhibition. The talks will be held in English.
